After watching "The Avengers" the other weekend, the character played by Scarlett Johansson I spent a weekend poking around the comic book shop and Wikipedia, learning about this classic comic book character. While watching the movie, I couldn't help but think: "a rifle would be so much more useful than a pair of Glock 26s during an alien invasion".
While a rifle isn't as "cool" as a pair of handguns for comic book use, it's a far more utilitarian weapon.
A classic Marvel character, the Black Widow is one of the oldest and most recognizable Marvel characters. Originally a Soviet spy, she of course, defects to the good guys, dates the Daredevil, and becomes a member of the Avengers. At least, that's what Wikipedia tells me. The fact that most of her strength comes from her training and skills instead of mutation, magic, or technology is what makes her such an interesting character for me!
As luck would have it, our friend Em had also seen the movie, and on a free afternoon we tried to capture the essence of the character with empty space in the warehouse and a rifle we had just finished putting together for a local customer. Em's crimson red hair (she's naturally a strawberry blonde) alluded well to the Black Widow, and her upper body strength and familiarity with weapons made this character connection an easy match.
We imagined this as a quiet moment in a safe house somewhere. Makes sense that a comic book character would be fond of comics right? Em's got a copy of the awesome Marvel Max series "FURY" in her hands.
Changing the angles and poses slightly, we also made allusions to the masterpiece by Renaissance artist Alessandro Botecelli. Even if you're not an art nerd, you probably know which piece we're alluding to!
Anyway, hope you enjoyed our fun little photoshoot, we'll definitely have more to come!
